Director Ricky Greenwood turns
his focus on women’s sports from
roller derby (Talk Derby to Me)
to wrestling with this somewhat
formulaic but ultimately moving look
at an athlete past her prime. Great
opening sequence of Ariel X, as
Layla, a one-time wrestling star,
struggling to pull herself together to
face a world of weariness and pain.
Layla overdoes the painkillers
and is arrested for DUI. She meets
former colleague Nina Hartley, who
owns an amateur wrestling squad.
No-nonsense Nina hires her as a
coach to “whip the girls into shape.”
The deal is complicated by Layla’s
history with one of the wrestlers,
Sophie (Sinn Sage).
The wrestling scenes are well
choreographed yet spontaneous
and the women seem to enjoy themselves.
A highlight is Whitney Wright
decking the ref with a folding chair.
Sophie and Layla have a mano-a-
mano bout and Sophie wins. But it
leads to some potent make-up sex,
very realistic, all sweat and passion.
And Hartley’s star power continues
to shine in non-sex.
