Good Vibrations
Flashy Neon
The flesh and neutral tones of the past are being supplemented
by eye-searing Day-glo colors. Wild and vivid color palettes have
been seen for years in vibrators from a handful of companie s —
Fun Factory, Vibratex and Evolved Novelties come right to
mind—but it seems everyone’s getting into the act now.
Pipedream Products has its Neon line, and Doc Johnson is
continuing to add to the Glo family of toys. And even lingerie is
brightening up. Lapdance Lingerie, a relatively new line from
Xgen Products, is now offering its basic black clubwear in
screaming-bright yellow, magenta and blue.
“The color spectrum has expanded. It’s been interesting to see
that,” said Jackie Strano, executive vice president at Good
Vibrations. “They’re playful colors. Folks are used to personalizing
and customizing certain things—like cell phone covers—and
I’ve noticed brighter colors in marketing in general. It’s not just
our industry.”
“They’re hard to miss, aren’t they?” said Larry Garland, CEO of
Eldorado Trading. “We seem to be moving through them pretty
well. I don’t think anybody was copying anybody; they just saw
an idea and thought it was a good one.”
“Neon colors come and go out of style very fast,” pointed out
Desiree Duffie, director of public relations at California Exotic
Novelties. “It’s a quick-hit type of thing. They’re ‘in’ for a couple
years, tops, and then back out. Our Posh line is done in bright,
vibrant pinks, electric blue, a gorgeous orange and a bright
purple. It’s fun, it’s playful, it doesn’t make any excuses about
what it is. These are sex toys, and they’re fun, and sex is fun.
Let’s roll. Posh takes advantage of the bright colors and that
whole style that’s in right now.”
Sexuality specialist Kim Airs said, “As with fashion, neon
colors come and go. They come up on the radar every few years,
at Target and Kohl’s. Why not sex toys? Neon colors are really
easy to find in the toy box, so they make a lot of sense in that
sense. They’ll fall in and out of favor with the fashion whims.”
