Over his 20-plus years as the owner of a gay porn talent management agency, Howard Andrew has received many phone calls with wild stories awaiting him on the other end of the line. He’s heard it all. Which makes it all the more surprising that when he got the call that he was being inducted into the GayVN Hall of Fame, he was—for once—in disbelief.
“I was like, ‘Get the hell out of here!’ I thought (AVN CEO Tony Rios) was kidding. Totally caught me off guard. I probably had a three-day smile on my face. And the first call was to my mom, who of course told everybody else in her little retirement community,” laughs the owner of FabScout Entertainment. “I see my mother probably three to four times a week, and everybody there knows that she has a gay son and he’s in the porn business—and nobody cares and nobody judges.”
Last year, the company celebrated its 20th anniversary—two decades after legendary gay
porn icon Rick Ford (a.k.a. Dirk Yates) walked into a South Florida nightclub and approached Andrew, asking the manager about hiring a model that was performing at his establishment. That started a crash course in talent management that forever changed Andrew’s life. Two decades later, he has become so synonymous with the industry that any mention of the name “Howard” in conversation leaves no doubt about exactly who people are referring to.
“About a month after Rick walked into the club, (Massive Studios owner) John Bruno walked in, and it was exactly the same story. Him and I became very good friends, and he booked a lot of my models. I was getting my models by going out to bars and handing out business cards, going to Home Depot and handing out cards. Everywhere I went I was handing out cards. I had no fear back then; I was hungry to make my business a success,” Andrew says.
