THE SCARLET T LET TER
HARLOTS
IN TRANSLATION
≠ STORY: SCARLETT REVELL
I really like the word “Harlot.” It’s the type of word very stuffy men used
to use for women who had sex freely, but just not with them. Then it
became a word for women who were in charge of their own sexuality.
If you call yourself a harlot, you enjoy sex and aren’t ashamed that you
do. If a man calls you a harlot, he is really hoping you’ll enjoy it with him.
I like the words “whore” and “slut,” too, but “harlot” has a much more
whimsical, lighthearted ring to it.
We’re following up our AVN-nominated schoolgirl movie The
Headmistress and the Harlots this summer, shooting somewhere in
Scotland, and it’s a nice break from the movies we usually do. Even
though I’m much more suited to Serious Pornography with elegant,
lingerie-wearing glamcore models looking gorgeous and badass in their
heels, the Harlots movies make me laugh. Since I moved to London I’ve
been on a steady diet of 70s/80s-era “Benny Hill” and “Carry On Girls,”
which are all about big-breasted, scantily-clad ladies running around
and making men trip over themselves. They are sweet and sexy at the
same time. And yes, they’re sexist as hell and probably couldn’t be
made today (except by a porn company). But you can see a direct line
between those shows and the dozen or more Harlots movies.
