really listen to the members. … Shooting for Lust has
been shooting what I want and creating a project that
looks and feels like I want it to look and feel. So I am the
target audience.”
Though the Lust team exercised the right to approve the
script, cast and crew, there were few other constraints.
Even the length of episodes can vary. “The only
instructions to the actors are to stay in character, have
sex like these characters would, and talk about the pop
shot position” so that the camera can be positioned to
capture it.
Speaking of the cinematography, Calvert explains that
the dialogue is shot by Pryor using either a hand-held
camera or the Easyrig. “The idea behind that is you get
some camera movement so the camera feels alive. … It’s
exactly what I want. And for the sex scenes, he wears the
Easyrig and I hand-hold.”
Shooting sex scenes for this project, Calvert is aiming
for something different than mainstream porn. “I love the
bright, white gonzo style of overlit, overexposed bright
colors on the clothing. I love to look at it, but that’s not
what this is. It’s something different. It’s not something
better. It’s just an entirely different style of shooting sex.”
She cites as an example a scene shot on a couch.
“I have this great hardcore shot but I’m focusing on
the candles in the foreground. There’s hardcore in the
background, but it’s not what I’m focused on. I’m getting
hands and hair and different things that you normally
don’t see. Because we’re not shooting sex scenes like
we’re trying to make a porno.”
But for the rest of today, it’s back to dialogue. Calvert
will play Phoebe, a character who will enter the orbit of
primary couple Parker and Abigail in future episodes.
The crew has turned two downstairs rooms into an indie
bookstore where Parker will first encounter Phoebe.
But daylight is fading. “I would love to burn this while
we have some semblance of light,” says Pryor, wearing
socks to avoid making noise on the wooden floors.
Parker is intrigued by Phoebe, who recognizes the author
and knows his work. Though the large crew is silent as
the camera rolls, it’s still hard to hear the actors softly
speaking their lines. But Calvert is listening carefully.
After the cut, she says firmly, “I can do better.”
And that’s exactly what she does.
Primary will be released in April as six episodes on
