The project marks two fairly significant crossing points of sorts for Camryn— namely, her first time acting in a feature for Calvert ... and her first time taking on a leading role.
While a scene is being shot between co-stars Dana Vespoli and Liz Jordan in the back quarters of the single-story suburban house that serves as Maggie’s childhood home in the movie, Camryn lures us out to her car parked on the street a couple houses down to share her thoughts on this new career steppingstone.
“It was definitely cool to step out of my typical box of just being a down and dirty slut,” she laughs, “and getting to, like, put on a different hat.”
While she’s done a modicum of acting in a smattering of other scripted fare, she submits in no uncertain terms that “this is different than anything else I’ve done so far.”
Asked how she feels about her thespian chops in the role, she muses, “I feel like I definitely have some work to do, but it was nice to get to do that. I actually love acting. When I was a kid it was something I always wanted to do, and I didn’t realize that I would end up doing it one day. I kind of gave up on it after drama class ended. But it was really fun, and I want to do more.”
Landing the role of Maggie did not exactly happen by chance, mind you. “A few months ago, I was on a set with Bree Mills and I was telling her about things I want to do this year,” Camryn divulges. “And I was just like, I really want to do my first features, I really want to possibly do an important role in a feature, I want to try having a lot of dialogue to see if it’s something that I can do.
“And I also said—because I adore Casey as a director and as a performer—I would love to work for Casey. And so then, that’s what happened.”
On Calvert’s directing abilities, Camryn observes, “I really feel like Casey does a good job of making sure everyone has to stay on task and do what they’re doing, and if you’re not a part of this you need to go somewhere else so that we can move quickly. Because otherwise we would all just fuck off and we’d be on set until like 3 a.m.”
Back inside the house, Calvert confirms this assessment in a sense while giving the gathered cast instructions for how to handle the slices of birthday cake Vespoli will be distributing to each of them in the last scene left on the shooting schedule.
“When you have a piece of cake in your hand, fake eat it until I tell you it’s OK to eat it,” she barks to the room in her most commanding timbre.
With a wry smirk, Parker cracks, “This feels like second grade ... like, ‘Now children...’”
Rejoins Calvert, “I feel like part of directing is, ‘OK, everybody, this is what we’re going to do.’”
Then a few takes later, in earnest: “For real, no eating cake until I say it’s OK to eat cake.”
Spun is scheduled to debut July 25 on its own dedicated Adult Time channel.
