“It’s a much bigger production in terms of scope...”
- Casey Calvert
“I’ve been wanting to put Seth in a film for a while for what I feel like are pretty obvious reasons,” she confided. “He’s a wonderful actor, he’s great. And it felt very important to me that ... I wanted to really give him a challenge. I feel like Seth often plays like the James Bond character or like, he’s always playing someone who’s cool and someone who’s suave, or he’s playing a bad guy, someone who’s a terrible person.
“So I wrote him a part, and I talked to him a lot about it ... the character he’s playing, Travis, is very insecure, is very vulnerable,” she continued. “And Seth did an incredible job being open and being vulnerable and exploring that insecurity and not being a tough cool guy. And [he] kind of blew me away and surprised me with how well ... like, I knew he was up for the challenge, but he exceeded my expectations.”
As for Sartre, Calvert likewise effused, “She also just blew me away. I actually had someone else in mind for the part, and was pretty close to hiring that other person, and then got Charlotte’s audition tape for a different part and was so impressed that I gave her the lead. And she was just like on another level. So understated, but so, so good.”
Compared to her major releases of the past couple years, namely the two seasons (thus far) of sprawling polyamory series Primary, Calvert said that Going Up and her just-released lesbian feature Sorrow Bay (also from Lust Cinema) represent a definite departure for her.
“Like I was saying earlier, I feel like with Primary I was really focused on developing a storytelling voice, and this year, I wanted to develop more of a visual voice,” she imparted. “And so Going Up and Sorrow Bay look completely different from Primary. They’re shot differently, we moved the camera differently. It’s a much bigger production in terms of scope.”
Episodes one and two of Going Up debut August 19 on LustCinema.com, with each remaining episode releasing weekly thereafter.
