While I’ve never seen a porn actress surprised at the size of a penis
before, there’s been more than one to whom I’ve had to explain an elevator.
That continues to be one of my favorite shocking on-the-job experiences
as an American porn director working in Europe. When we shoot the
Harlots movies (in which naughty schoolgirls who are all, somehow, over
18) get the better of their schoolmasters, we’re usually filming in some
manor house or castle. My partner, Gazzman, and I like watching the
faces of 19-year-olds from the U.K.—who’ve never visited one of the
hundreds of castles in their backyards before—set foot in one for the first
time, knowing they’re about to be paid to have sex in it, probably right
on top of a ghost. We feel like we’re patching a hole left by the British
educational system.
But a major difference between shooting commercial porn in the U.S.
and shooting it in Europe is that, in the U.S., we’re drawing from a few
locations—Florida, Vegas, San Francisco, L.A.—and the talent is making
their way to us with a certain understanding of how the system works. In
Europe, we get new girls from all over the continent and deep into Russia,
from little villages, sometimes, where talent agency scouts find them.
Then, as we’re casting, we’ll get a call from an agency that says, “Yeah,
we’ve got a new girl from one of the ‘stans (Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan,
etc.); she might need an orientation from HR…”
(It’s important to point out that these women are each over 18 and often
have been sex workers/cam girls, etc. in their hometowns, but may have
never had the opportunity to travel very far from them.)
So then we will meet an absolutely breathtaking woman at Heathrow
Airport who has just literally disembarked from the first airplane ride of her
life, and she’s scared of the escalator. She has never been in an elevator
before. I hold her finger while I show her how to press the button.
The sex she’s about to have doesn’t bother her in the slightest, but she’s
never been dressed or made-up by another person. Since our shoots
are often a week long as we film various scenes around the castle, this
person is on a combination working vacation and English language/
western culture immersion course. I try to put myself in her shoes (even
as I’m actually putting shoes onto her) to imagine both the excitement
and the bravery.
That’s one of the things that porn can do: It puts people from diverse
socioeconomic backgrounds together and pays them the same for similar
work. Yes, I know that sounds cheesy, but sex work has transformed the
lives of women who might otherwise have not had the opportunity.
And we do it in a castle.
If you watch some Scarlett Revell Studios movies (and I hope you do),
and you notice a woman who isn’t speaking too much, who isn’t “porn
famous” but looks like she’s having the time of her life, she is. There’s
usually one in every cast.
And you should see what happens when I give her her first vibrator.
