When Kira Noir spins around a pole in the Severe Sex

and that’s awesome, very beautiful—it’s just not me.”
It’s not that she’s heard racist remarks from anyone in
the adult industry, Noir emphasized. But she does believe
“they’re concerned about what the people who buy their porn
are going to think. And our country is still very weird about
race.”
Though it was initially hard to get bookings, Noir said
now she’s performing consistently and loving the work. She
mentioned a scene with Kelsi Monroe for Lesbian Beauties 16:

In the interim, Noir has some more
concrete goals to attain. “I haven’t
worked for BurningAngel, and I
actually used to be a goth kid. I have
this thing in my mind—I’m a hippie

“It was a slippery slope for me. I started with stripping.
It was supposed to be just for a little bit, just to get some
money,” Noir said, recalling her difficulties in getting a job
fresh out of high school. “Nobody wanted to hire me. So I
figured a strip club. ... Most people can take their clothes off
and make money.”
But more than money, she found both a career
and a community of like-minded people. “I
loved pole dancing, I love sex workers. Most
people who are in the sex industry are really,
really interesting.”
But her final push into professional adult
entertainment came when she saw Bonnie
Rotten perform. “She was electrifying on
stage. She was so engaging. She was getting
on the pole and doing a bunch of tricks. When
I saw her I thought, that’s what I want to do.”
Though she’s currently working out on
porn sets rather than strip clubs, Noir’s
physique still clearly demonstrates the
benefits of pole dancing. “I used to be a
stringbean,” she said. “My body definitely
improved once I started packing on the
muscle. I haven’t danced for six months, but
it’s just staying there.”
That taut body and her dreadlocks give Noir a
unique look—but that has its challenges: “I feel
like some people really don’t know how people are
going to react to black girls with natural hair,” she
said.
“And I have a very slender body so I don’t really fit
the porno black girl mold as much,” Noir continued.

Feeling good about her appearance wasn’t
something Noir always enjoyed. Before she got
into the industry, Noir said, “I had pretty low
self-esteem.”
One thing that changed Noir’s mindset was
seeing Skin Diamond in adult movies. “She
helped me a lot with my confidence. I saw
there was another slim girl with my skin tone
who was into alternative stuff. … I thought
she was really hot. And if she’s really hot,
maybe I can be kind of hot. Once I started
thinking like that, once I started to consider
myself a beautiful girl, things started getting
better for me.”
But they could get better still, Noir believes.
“I want to try to make it easier for black
women to be recognized in the porn community
as not just a fetish or a sub-category. I want to
get to the point where black women and Asian
women and Latina women are treated on the
same level. Just because we’re a different race
