When they started out, the two began working at
Passive Arts Studio, now known as Sanctuary, where
the owner wanted to make movies.
“So we started making movies for him, and it was
cool because we were able to make all our mistakes on
someone else’s nickel,” Severe said with a laugh.
When she and Broadway started making the films,
they shared the news with the others in their film
collective, who they were mildly surprised to learn were
“horrified.”
“They said no one would ever want to deal with
us because we were working in porn, we’d never get
another mainstream job again, whatever,” she said.
“On the upside, they didn’t want any of our ‘dirty porn
money’ to rent the equipment we needed, so they let us
use it for free!
“They get to direct never, I get to direct every month,
so I’d say it worked out,” she added.
Now, however, Severe doesn’t get to direct every
month for someone else: she and Broadway do their
movies on their terms. After starting Severe Society
Films in 2007, they made their own brand of kinky
movies, with Severe doing much of the directing and
most of the post-production work. Last year, they
signed a deal with Exile Distribution and changed the
company name to Severe Sex.
“Right now we are at the point we are so busy that
it’s good and bad,” Severe said. “We don’t seem to have
any days off, but we are doing what we love and it feels
good to be expanding and making good productions
and doing high-quality work. It’s nice to be in a spot
where we are accepted now.”
Severe said the deal with Exile came at a time when
BDSM was finding a presence in the mainstream world.
“I never felt bad about being a perv like some people
do,” she said. “But it’s nice to see so many people
finding their voice in BDSM. It’s awesome that the
lifestyle is getting more attention in mainstream. It’s
almost like the Stonewall era, that people are feeling
more comfortable to come out and say who they are.
And they are finding that there’s nothing wrong with
them, that’s just how they are wired.”
And Severe, Broadway and Severe Sex plan on
making content for many of those people.
“I’m hoping our hallmark we are known
for is our stories and our characters,” Severe
said. “I like to think we are somewhere
between Kink.com and New Sensations. I
think we have interesting stories, and good
sex, and humor and movies that show it
doesn’t have to be all red and black and in the
dungeon and dark. There are other types of
BDSM movies out there.”
While Severe Sex continues to grow and
expand, Severe hopes she can continue living her
dream, and challenging herself and others.
“I hope I am doing this with Jimmy well into
our old age,” she said. “I am doing what all those
people who were in our film collective only dreamed
of doing: I get to direct all the time, work with really
cool and fun people and pushing my boundaries and
skill levels. But I hope our movies are always accessible
to our fans.”
Femdom Futures
On a rainy night in February, a rare and welcome phenomenon during one of California’s driest
winters, another rare and welcome event took place. Dommes, subs, slaves, producers, actors and
fans of femdom content gathered inside a San Fernando Valley studio to celebrate the first-ever
winners of the newly created Femdom Awards and to celebrate the genre with like-minded fans.
The event was sponsored by King Adult Broadcast Network and Clips4Sale.
Before the festivities officially began, event organizer Glenn King thanked everyone in attendance, as well
as those who produce and star in femdom material, noting that when he started in the business in 2002 there
were only a handful of people making femdom content. He said the idea to create the Femdom Awards came
after more than a decade of attending other awards shows.
“I thought we were invisible,” he said. “We were competing in specialty categories,” he said, noting that
femdom is a small but tight community.
“We, by nature, are deviant people,” he
said. “We are freaks. We are kinky. It is time
for us in the femdom world to stand up and
be recognized.”
AVN couldn’t agree more. And for retailers
interested in exposing their clientele to
femdom content, there’s never been a better
time. See the DVD section for reviews of
some notable new femdom, fetish and BDSM
releases, including Black & Blue (James Deen
Productions), Jesse: Alpha Female (Jules
Jordan Video), Diamonds in the Rough
(DeViant Entertainment), Shades of Kink 4
(Sweet Sinner/Mile High Media) and The
Submission of Emma Marx: Boundaries (New
Sensations).
Looking more to the future, here are some
of the players on the femdom field and the
titles they’ve got coming down the pipeline.
Dee Severe
Not resting on the laurels she earned by
winning DVD of the Year for Treacherous
at the Femdom Awards, Severe Sex director
Dee Severe has some new titles out for
fans. “Our May release is Revenge of the
Housewives,” Severe said, “wherein Aiden
Starr, Kiki D’Aire and I spank the crap out of
miscreants in our suburban neighborhood.
And you also get to see the various misdeeds
that prompt the punishment. Holly Heart is
the neighborhood slut, Dixie Comet is the
meddling neighbor, and Alex Chance and
Charli Piper are the babysitters from hell. It’s hard spanking
plus sex, and a lot of fun.”
But Severe is even more worked up about Severe Sex’s
June release. “The upcoming DVD we’re extra excited about
is Ms. Grey,” she said, “starring Lily Cade, Skin Diamond,
Ela Darling, Kasey Warner and newcomer Dolly Leigh. It’s
a lesbian take on Fifty Shades—plus we fixed the plot. The
thing that bothered me most about the mainstream movie
was, that Grey’s kink was looked on as pathology. In our
version, Annabelle is fine with the kink; what she objects
to is, Ms. Grey is a jerk who cheats on her.” Adds co-
director Lily Cade, “As both a performer and director, I
try to create scenes featuring intensity, passion and a
